Remember in Back to the Future Part II, when there was an alternate 1985? In the alternate The Walking Dead Season 3, T-Dog is still alive right now and Carol is the one who died.
Greg Nicotero — who started as TWD’s special effects leader and is now also a co-executive producer and director — talked to The Walker Stalkerspodcast about his job, including how Season 3, Episode 4, “Killer Within” originally had a very different trajectory.
“It’s sad knowing the way the scripts come out. I know before the actors know when they’re going to go,” he said, “That’s the hardest situation, to be on set and sitting next to someone and you know that the writers are sitting in a room talking about how they are going to kill her off.”
As he explained, “In the original draft of ['Killer Within'] script, Melissa McBride’s character [Carol] was supposed to die. Iron-E [T-Dog] wasn’t going to die, it was going to be Carol. And there are times when one of the producers has to make that sad call and say, listen, I have some bad news for you. But it changes, you can’t get into situations where you call an actor and go hey dude in Episode 6 I hate to say it but you’re going to be gone. Because, by the time they get to Episode 6, you know what, we changed that a little bit and Carol’s going to live now and T-Dog’s going to die.”
He said no one in the cast wants to take his calls. He just called Melissa McBride one summer to see how she was doing, but instead of saying hello she immediately asked, “Why are you calling me? I’m going to die, aren’t I?”
Not yet! What do you think of Carol surviving over T-Dog? They must have plans for Carol, right, or did they just not want to have two women die in the same episode, since Lori also died during “Killer Within”? Poor T-Dog really deserved better — he had a heroic end, but they never developed his story. At least let him leave for the coast, like he always wanted!
